Editorial overview
What it is
A comically challenging medieval platformer! Gertie has wasted decades of her life at the top of this wretched tower… waiting for a prince to rescue her. Finally, she's had enough! It's time to take matters into her own hands. A twist on the awesome platformer Jump King by Nexile, Fall Queen follows the story of the princess who was never rescued. She decides to rescue herself, and as she descends the crumbling castle, every leap brings her closer to freedom. Adorned with beautifully painted backdrops and absurd cartoony side-characters, this precision 2D platformer will both delight your intellect and have you cursing out loud at the challenge.
You play as Princess Gertie, an older woman who been locked away in her tower for many years, waiting for a rescuer. In the early days, she believed in her cause -- but as time went on, she grew weary. At the narrative core of this game are the Stages of Grief, which Gertie must face as she descends the tower. She grieves the life that could have been, the time wasted sitting in the tower, wishing she would have left sooner... Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance are woven into the level design, colors and environments. Dynamic lighting and environmental effects like dust clouds and rain work together to deepen the emotional response to the story.
As Gertie descends the tower, she gains two powerups that give her more freedom and strength. She starts the game wearing a large ballgown, which impedes her ability to make big movements. She then discovers a sword, which she uses to slice off the cumbersome skirts which allows her to take big jumps. Later, she takes the spikey boots of a fallen knight -- which gives her the ability to slam into the ground to destroy enemies from above.
The art style of this game is inspired by the painted backdrops of traditionally animated films blended with the whimsical characters of adult cartoons. There was particular care taken by our environment artists to create a cohesive art style and an immersive world. We referenced medieval art to create our enemy and NPC characters and had a lot of fun creating the world where they lived. We found it important to tell Gertie's story as a strong and wise woman finally fleeing the tragic life she was trapped in by the expectant, ignorant or otherwise naive men in her life.
Team Grandma Invasion This game was made with love, for educational purposes at The Game Assembly in Malmö, Sweden. Our team is a multidisciplinary group of 13 passionate game developers. We created this project over the course of 10 weeks in spring 2026, under tight deadlines and continuous scrutiny from our mentors and playtesters.
